Another jersey worn by a member of the legendary 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team has been sold at auction. Rob McClanahan’s red, white and blue jersey from the ‘Miracle on Ice’ victory over the USSR was purchased for $86,220 early Thursday morning, according to auction officials. The price includes a 19.5% buyer’s premium.
McClanahan was a key member of the young USA squad that upset the Soviets, 4-3 and went on to win the gold medal at Lake Placid. According to Classic Auctions, McClanahan traded the jersey at the end of the Games. They say it has been photo-matched to that historic night.
Hundreds of items were sold by the Montreal-based auction company, with a total take of nearly $1.4 million.
Classic also offered an early 1970s Roberto Clemente game model bat and autographed photo.
The company says the items originated from the collection of Montreal Expos fan and collector Carey Diab, who was a regular at Jarry Park during the latter stages of Clemente’s career and received the bat from the Hall of Fame outfielder. The bat and photo were both personalized by Clemente. The lot sold for $31,385.
Items consigned by four-time Stanley Cup champion Billy Smith generated a lot of interest among bidders. Smith’s 1982-83 New York Islanders Stanley Cup ring sold for $36,563 with the buyer’s premium. His photo-matched 1982-83 Cup Finals away jersey sold for $25,322 and his 13”
1979-80 New York Islanders personal Stanley Cup Championship trophy went for $11,356.
John Gentile’s 1994 New York Rangers Stanley Cup ring, representing the year in which the club’s 50+ year drought was broken, went for $17,055.
