A former card company executive helped introduce some big fans to Willie Mays.
Josh Wheless is only 18, but there’s no need to teach baseball history to him. The northern California teenager knows all about Willie Mays. And now, he can call him a friend.
Thanks to a business relationship between Wheless’ father and former Donruss boss Ann Powell, Josh and his family got to visit Mays at his home in Atherton, CA this summer. They were the recipients of some unsolicited autographs and plenty of great stories. They got a tour of Mays’ trophy room where he revealed a document that may have inspired him to greatness. But that wasn’t all.
There would be more Sey Hey moments before the summer was out. The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat chronicled the story, showing another side to the Hall of Famer who hasn’t always been quite so cordial at card shows.
