An Indiana fund-raiser brings fans from all over for bargain-priced autographs and a major sports memorabilia auction.
When you can count on Don Mattingly to show up and sign hundreds of autographs, you know you’ve got a chance for success.
Mattingly isn’t just the prime attraction on the autograph guest list, he’s a member of the group doing the fundraising. Evansville, Indiana’s Hot Stove League raises money for youth sports and other community projects through it’s annual Night of Memories.
In addition to Mattingly, Baltimore Orioles’ amiable Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson was part of the 2008 guest list. Mattingly signed autographs for $30 ($50 for bats or jerseys) while Robinson autographs were available at $35 ($50 for bats or jerseys). All of the money, less expenses, is donated back to local projects.
In past years, the event has drawn Hall of Famers like Yogi Berra, Harmon Killebrew, Paul Hornung and Bob Griese.
This year’s memorabilia auction included some impressive pieces gathered with the help of Mattingly and other big leaguers who are affiliated with the Hot Stove League. With autograph prices almost always less than card shows, the local newspaper reports the evening also attracts devoted fans from long distances.
This year’s fundraiser brought in over $125,000.
