A Hall of Fame caliber Billy Martin jersey has found a new home after the man he gave it to sold it in an auction.
The jersey Billy Martin gave to the Son of Sam’s last victim has been sold for $23,000 in an online auction by Steiner Sports.
Martin wore the jersey in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series, when the Yankees beat the Dodgers to clinch their first championship in 15 years.
The late Yankee manager had given the shirt to Robert Violante to help raise his spirits after the attack in July of 1977. Violante was 20 years old at the time and out on his first date with Stacy Moskowitz when David Berkowitz shot them both. Moskowitz was killed.
Violante told the New York Daily News last month that he was looking for a good home for the jersey which he said has hung in his closet for 30 years.
"It has nothing to do with me getting rich off this," said the Brooklyn resident. "If I had children or nieces or nephews, I’d pass this down to them. But I don’t."
