Young customers aren’t showing up in droves like they used to and that’s putting one element of Ken Baker’s business out to pasture.
After 15 years, a once-popular Homewood, Illinois sports card shop is shutting down at the end of the month.
Suburban Sports, which became a gathering spot for sports fans young and old after it opened in 1994, isn’t profitable enough to maintain operations.
Owner Ken Baker sold trophies and silk-screened shirts there too, but it was the card business that kept kids coming in. Now, he says, safety-conscious families aren’t letting their kids out of their sight as much, but an equally big problem is that he’s seen a major drop-off in the number of kids collecting cards.
The store’s closing made the pages of the Hometown Star.
