Modern cards dominated the action as Goldin Auctions wrapped up its September Card and Memorabilia Auction.
The top seller was one of the 99 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James Rookie Patch Autograph cards. The BGS 8.5 example sold Saturday night for $1.3 million. It was the second time the same card had been offered at auction this year. It set a record for the grade in March when it sold for over $1.5 million.
Hours before the much talked about return of Tom Brady to New England, a key copy of Brady’s most valuable rookie card was on the block. The 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket Autograph graded BGS 7/9 and numbered 1/100 sold for $799,500, the highest price ever recorded for that grade.
Other modern era football cards sold included a record price for a 2020 Prizm Football card: $210,330 for a 1/1 Justin Herbert Black Finite Rookie Autograph graded BGS 9/10.
The auction also saw the highest auction price for any Baker Mayfield card when a 1/1 2018 National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield rookie card netted $113,160.
Soccer cards show no sign of slowing down with a 2003 Christiano Ronaldo Mega Craques rookie card graded PSA 10 rocketing to $319,800, the most ever paid for a Ronaldo card of any kind, according to Goldin.
In all, the auction generated $13 million in sales. Prices referenced here include a 23% buyer’s premium. Those who pay on time and not by credit card will pay 20%.
Prices of 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 10s haven’t come close to hitting their unprecedented highs from earlier this year but have been ticking back upward a bit. Goldin sold one for $344,400 on Saturday night.
The company also sold a 2021 Prizm Black Gold LeMelo Ball rookie card numbered to 5 and graded PSA 9 for $148,830.
“The greats are the greats and no one can ever take that away from them. Jordan, LeBron, Brady, Ronaldo; their legacies will stand the test of time,” said Goldin Auctions Executive Chairman and Founder Ken Goldin. “What’s so fun to watch, though, is which up-and-coming athletes that collectors believe will be the next greats and who will join the pantheon of all-time winners. Between Zion, Mahomes, Baker and LaMelo Ball, the next generation of sports is going to be a hell of a lot of fun to watch.”
