It sat in a shoebox for years but over the weekend, one of the 50 copies of the 2008 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor Kobe Bryant–the card that shows him being guarded intensely by LeBron James–sold for a whopper of a price.
The card was brought to last summer’s National Sports Collectors Convention by a collector who had opened packs just stuck them away. He brought it to PWCC’s booth at the show in Chicago where it was authenticated and graded by PSA. It came back a 10 and went into PWCC’s November Premier Auction where it sold for a record-setting $312,000 on Saturday night. The card is one of six rated Gem Mint.
Some big ticket modern cards sold Saturday included the 1/1 2017 National Treasures Red NFL Shield Patrick Mahomes that netted $456,000 and a 2007 Exquisite Gold Kevin Durant Rookie Patch Autograph numbered to 35. Graded BGS 9, it went for $360,000.
Other six-figure sales included:
- 2003 Exquisite Limited Logos Michael Jordan Patch Auto (#/75) BGS 9.5 $336,000
- 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractor Tom Brady BGS 9.5 $312,000
- 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 7 $312,000
- 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card PSA 10 $312,000
The auction featured 274 cards across baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, golf, boxing, mixed martial arts, and Pokémon for a total value of just over $12 million.
Opening Night jerseys worn by LeBron James, Steph Curry and Ja Morant are among those on the block through NBA Auctions. Bidding ends next month.
Late Thursday night, Luka Doncic’s first 2021-22 Mavs jersey sold for over $31,000.
