We’re not yet six months through 2021, but collectors have been buying a lot of Kobe Bryant cards on eBay. Nearly a quarter million pieces of cardboard featuring the late Lakers legend have been sold either via auction or straight sale since the start of the year.
Bryant cards and memorabilia have been in demand since the tragic helicopter crash that took his life and interest peaked again in the months leading up to his Hall of Fame induction this spring. eBay says it has recorded over 15 million searches for Bryant cards this year alone.
It’s the continuation of a trend that saw sales of Bryant cards spike nearly 600 percent in the six months following his death on January 26, 2020.
There’s also been some focus this year on the 25th anniversary of a stellar 1996 NBA Draft class. Bryant, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Steve Nash and Stephon Marbury were among the biggest names to come out of a group that entered the NBA that fall. All but Marbury have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
eBay says sales of Iverson and Allen cards doubled between January and February of this year, with searches for Iverson cards increasing over 150 percent at the start of the new year.
Searches for Allen’s cards doubled between January and February. Searches for Nash cards increased 150% at the start of 2021 while sales of Stephon Marbury trading cards doubled from December to January.
As we reported in February, overall sales of basketball cards on eBay increased 373 percent from 2019 to 2020, led by Michael Jordan, Bryant and Zion Williamson.
