Karl Malone is doing some serious housecleaning. The Basketball Hall of Famer has consigned hundreds of items from his personal collection to an auction that’s currently underway.
Game-worn jerseys, Olympic Dream Team items, dozens of awards and even sports cards he’s held onto for a long time are all being sold through Goldin.
Last spring, Malone sold 24 game-used jerseys and shoes from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, including a jersey signed by Michael Jordan that netted over $3 million. This time, the items center mostly around his 19-year NBA career.
Malone’s personal copy of the lithograph presented to members of the 1996 ’50 Greatest Players’ team leads off the sale. The 50×37″ framed piece includes autographs of each player named to the team named to commemorate the league’s 50th season except Pete Maravich who had died eight years earlier.
Bidding had reached $24,000 as of Monday.
Among the game-used jerseys he consigned is one from the 1996-97 Utah Jazz season worn in at least 12 games including three NBA Finals games against the Chicago Bulls and multiple playoff games.
A complete game-used Jazz uniform from 2002-03 and an away jersey from that same season are expected to bring at five-figure prices. There’s also a 2003-04 Lakers jersey worn in the playoffs and even a high school basketball jersey.
Malone’s 1989 and ’93 NBA All-Star Game trophies, a duplicate copy of his 1992 Olympic gold medal, two duplicate NBA MVP (Podoloff) trophies, the ball from his 10,000th career point and dozens of other awards are part of the sale.
Other memorabilia the 60-year-old Louisiana native has turned over to the auction house include three Dream Team signed basketballs, a Dream Team photo signed to him by Charles Barkley and including autographs from Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, a 2003-04 Lakers team signed ball with Kobe Bryant, signed basketballs from multiple All-Star games and game-worn shoes.
Along the way, he apparently become a bit of a card collector. Numerous 1990s era cases of sports cards, a 1948 Leaf Babe Ruth, 1957 Topps Mickey Mantle and a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie card
The auction closes December 30.
