A jersey from Jose Fernandez’s first start of what would be his final season is among the items being offered by Fanatics Auctions.
The white Miami Marlins jersey was worn by the late pitcher on April 6, 2016 when he struck out 13 of the 17 Detroit Tigers he faced but gave up five runs in a 7-3 Marlins win. One of the most promising starters in baseball, the 24-year-old Fernandez won 16 games and struck out 253 batters before losing his life in a speedboat accident in late September of that year.
The white #16 jersey shows significant game use and carries an opening bid of $2,500.
In all, the Fanatics Jersey Auction includes 124 lots. Other game-used shirts include those donned by members of the New York Yankees, including Giancarlo Stanton and one of the first Yankee jerseys worn by Anthony Rizzo to reach the auction block. A 2017 Memorial Day Cubs jersey worn by Rizzo is also among the listings.
A 2019 Christian Yelich Brewers jersey is also among the game-used baseball jerseys listed as well as NFL jerseys from Terry McLaurin, Mike Williams, Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard plus several NBA gamers donned by James Hardin, Mike Conley and Kemba Walker. All are dated to specific games.
There are dozens of non-game worn autographed jerseys, too, including one signed by LeBron James. Some carry multiple inscriptions and are hand numbered. Among the players represented are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ted Williams, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Duke Snider, Ichiro, Shohei Ohtani, Ken Griffey Jr., and Ed Reed.
The auction runs through April 13 on the Fanatics Auction website.
