Johnny Bench isn’t selling all of the memorabilia from his Hall of Fame baseball career but he is parting with some pretty significant pieces.
Bench’s 1975 and ’76 World Series rings and his 1970 and ’72 National League MVP awards are the four generating the biggest bids so far in the annual Louisville Slugger Factory & Museum Auction that’s now underway. Over 100 items from Bench’s life and career with the Cincinnati Reds are among the headliners in the sale, which is being conducted exclusively online this year.
The 1975 ring is at nearly $76,000 while the ’76 ring is pushing $65,000 and the auction still has more than two weeks to run.
There’s one particular item that Bench says he couldn’t part with and he’s doing something unique to remember those rings and trophies he’s letting go. He talked about that—and what he’s doing with the proceeds—in a video chat with Sports Illustrated.
