A Team Canada jersey worn during the World Junior Hockey Championships by the world’s hottest prospect is generating an eBay bidding war. The #17 shirt donned by 17-year-old Connor McDavid is part of an auction being conducted by Hockey Canada. The current high bid is over $15,000 with bidding not set to close until Thursday. As of Sunday, more than 100 bids had been placed.
McDavid has drawn comparisons to Pittsburgh Penguins’ star Sidney Crosby and is expected to be the first pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. He currently plays for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.
A 6’1 center, McDavid has five assists and two goals through five games at the World Juniors, which are being held in Toronto and Montreal.
The size 60 Nike Swift jersey was worn by McDavid during a December 21 pre-competition game vs. Sweden and the December 27 round robin game against Germany.
This jersey includes his name and number on the back. It won’t be autographed, according to the listing, but does come with a letter of authenticity from Hockey Canada.
Net proceeds from the auction, which includes several other game-worn and game-used Team Canada items, will go to the Hockey Canada Foundation, which supports grassroots hockey initiatives across the country.
