When Upper Deck changed the hobby’s trading card landscape by including autographed cards inside its products back in the early 1990s, Jerry West was one of the first former athletes who signed basketball cards for the company. Now, the 79-year-old Hall of Famer has a new autograph deal, this one for higher-end memorabilia and collectibles through Upper Deck Authenticated.
West has literally spent his entire adult life in basketball, first as a standout at West Virginia, then a 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers that included an NBA title and NBA Finals MVP. West went on to coach the Lakers and serve as the team’s general manager, where he crafted five notable championship teams. He also served as general manager for the Memphis Grizzlies before taking on an advisory role with the powerful Golden State Warriors.
Upper Deck created several items specifically for the new partnership including a framed NBA Logo Patch piece that showcases an image of West next to his iconic NBA logo silhouette. A signed replica mini-backboard includes the inscription “Mr. Clutch,” and is the first of its kind in UDA’s mini-backboard collection. The new collection also includes “The Show,” the largest known autographed memorabilia piece, which pays tribute not only to West’s playing days, but to his influential time as an NBA executive as well. They’re being sold via the Upper Deck store.
“Jerry West is one of the most iconic players in NBA history,” said Jason Masherah, President of Upper Deck. “We are excited to add authentic signed memorabilia from West to our expansive NBA portfolio, and to offer innovative new collectibles that NBA fans around the world can enjoy for years to come.”
