Steiner Sports has been expanding its memorabilia empire into the college ranks in recent years, reaching deals with Syracuse University and Notre Dame for certain items.
Not long ago, the New York-based company dipped into the Southeastern Conference and the University of Alabama.
They were supposed to be selling pieces of stadium turf and items from the lockerroom. However, the man who runs the place, Thad Turnipseed (yes, that’s his name), told The Times Daily, an Alabama newspaper, that the school is a state institution and that requires certain guidelines be followed.
“The problem is state bid law,” Turnipseed said. “Even if he wanted to buy it and replace it, I still have to put it out to bid so anybody could bid on it.”
Steiner officials were a little surprised to hear that. Here’s the rest of the story.
