This year’s Indianapolis 500 was won by a rookie—and another guy Mike Thomsen needed for his collection.
Thomsen collects autographs—not just from Indy winners, but from every driver who started a race. It’s a list that numbers over 750 names. Current drivers or those from the recent past are easy but grabbing a ‘graph from a guy who started the race a century ago isn’t easy.
The Avon, IN resident is one of a small number of collectors who own the signatures of at least 500 drivers.
Even if you’re not a race fan, there are elements every collector with a specific focus can definitely relate to the quest—and the friendships that come with sharing successes—and failures—with like-minded hobbyists.
On race weekend, the Indianapolis Star offered a story and photos of Thomsen’s collection.
