The mix of football and politics seems to have worked as collectors chase down the suddenly populr prizes in one early-season football product.
With interest in collectibles of President-elect Barack Obama on the rise, Upper Deck may see renewed interest in its 2008 Icons Football product.
Exchange cards for a “Presidential Letterman” card were inserted randomly into Icons Football which released in late August. The cards could be redeemed for whichever candidate who won the election and now – after Obama made political history – collectors who have registered these cards with Upper Deck will be receiving the Obama cards.
Collectors who find multiple cards in their packs–or buy them online– could eventually spell out either “OBAMA” or “PRESIDENT” or both with the individual lettters. Since the election, exchange cards have been selling for anywhere from $50 to $100 per card on eBay. The completed cards should ship out in early January, shortly before Obama is sworn in.
