“Sports memorabilia” isn’t always baseball cards, old programs and game worn jerseys. For many collectors, the term also means items that are just…well…old. The games and their histories can be told through the development of sporting goods and other items that were produced along the way.
They’re also great for display and that’s what drives the ongoing hunt for items that may have been stored, unappreciated, in garages, closets and attics for decades.
Take old baseball gloves. Books have been written on the subject. Big league players have endorsed them for years. Styles have changed and the design has undergone a radical change from the first mitts that appeared in the late 1800s.
Brett Lowman of Play OK Antiques had one of the most eye-catching displays of antique (and some more modern) sports memorabilia at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore, including an original Louisville Slugger bat rack that was restored and held a lineup of old store model bats, some endorsed by long gone heroes.
Take a look–and learn a little something.
