Hunt Auctions to Offer Extensive Tobacco-Related Collection

Hunt Auctions will celebrate the 20th  anniversary of operations this year. The changes that have occurred in the sports memorabilia business, let alone the world itself, over the last twenty years are certainly numerous and significant, both for the better and the worse.

“Through all of the bad and good this hobby has seen we are very, very proud to have grown and matured as a company to better serve our clients at the highest level in our industry,” said company president David Hunt.

To begin their 20th  year in business Hunt Auctions will offer the personal collection of Thomas Caruso within their February 15 auction. The collection is comprised of dozens of unique and vintage tobacco items, non-sports cards, and sports cards.   Caruso has been a lifelong collector of trading cards most notably baseball and football cards up until 1979 when the collection was sold. The amazing part of the story is that he  started again with the help of his kids attending card shows and the like leading to the offered collection to be sold within the February sale.
According to the auction house, the breadth and variety and his collection is “nothing short of astounding with special mention to the numerous rarities and complete sets which are almost never seen intact as offered”.  The Caruso collection is  the finest the company has brought to auction in that time period.

Specifically, the collection will include tobacco card sets, single cards, related wrappers and packaging, premiums, and high grade condition exemplars.  In addition to tobacco card related materials the Caruso collection features hundreds of vintage tobacco packages, tins, signs, and related ephemera dating from the mid 19th  century to the 1960s era.  The collection is being offered in its entirety for the first time at public auction.

The February auction will additionally include an array of vintage sports memorabilia including a variety of 1952 Topps baseball cards, a Babe Ruth autographed photograph, an estate collection of baseball tobacco cards, including a Sherry Magie error card.  Also included is a 2009 Philadelphia Phillies NL Championship ring, and a collection of historic game used baseballs from a former Major League coach, inclusive of Pete Rose’s National League record-breaking hit passing Stan Musial.

Consignments are being accepted for future Hunt Auctions sales inclusive of the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest®  Live Auction to be held in Kansas City July 2012.
