A collector grade copy of the legendary T206 Sherry “Magie” error card—one of the ‘Big Four’ in the iconic tobacco issue—is among over 1,600 lots in Huggins & Scott’s Spring Auction.
American Tobacco Company designers misspelled the name of feisty outfielder Sherry Magee in its initial print run. The error was discovered and corrected relatively quickly, leaving only a small number of error versions available to collectors today.
Along with the Honus Wagner, Eddie Plank and Doyle NY Nat’l (Hands above Head), the Magie error has long held a place among the most valuable and rare T206 cards.
The auction features an array of pre-war cards, including a trio of newly discovered 1910 Baltimore News Orioles cards–all among just a few known surviving examples of the rare schedule-card set that was a forerunner of the 1914 BN set that featured Babe Ruth’s first card.
Also up for grabs: a 1934 World Wide Gum Babe Ruth (PSA 3) and a 1934 WWG Lou Gehrig (SGC 3),an 1887 N28 Allen & Ginter Mike “King” Kelly (SGC 6), an 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter John Montgomery Ward (PSA 6) and a 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy Honus Wagner (PSA 4).
The post-War part of the auction includes several iconic single cards including a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie card (PSA 3), a 1948-49 Leaf Jackie Robinson rookie (PSA 2), a 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie (PSA 6), a 1955 Topps Aaron (PSA 8), a 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax (PSA 7) and a 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews rookie high number (PSA 4).
There’s also 1961 Topps set with 524 of the 572 cards autographed, signed items from Ruth, Ty Cobb and Roberto Clemente.
Bidding is online now and will run through Thursday, April 4 with initial bids closing at 9 PM ET.
