Photos used to produce some iconic vintage baseball cards will join cards from one of the best 1966 Topps sets in existence, a 1956 Topps “Master Set”and hundreds of other items in Huggins & Scott’s first auction of 2018. Bidding is set to go live Friday, January 26 and close Thursday, February 8.
The fifth best set of 1966 Topps baseball on PSA’s Registry will be broken up and sold in 220 lots, with most cards rating PSA 9 or better.
Vintage baseball card collectors will find numerous pre-war rarities including professionally graded and raw examples of cards from a variety of designations, including Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Christy Mathewson and Cy Young; a number of graded and ungraded tobacco and candy cards offered as singles and in lots. Highlights include: a collection of PSA graded T206 White Borders including Ty Cobb Bat on Shoulder (PSA 4) and others.
Collectors will have the rare opportunity to bid on a group of contact proofs used for cards produced in the 1950s including Willie Mays (1954 Topps), Phil Rizzuto (1956 Topps and 1954 Bowman), Duke Snider (1956 Topps), Bobby Thomson (1952 Bowman) and others.
The 1956 master set includes all variations and totals 540 cards. Also up for bid will be a PSA 10 1969 Topps Willie Mays, a rare 1970 Topps “Teammates” Grow Power group of six, several 1908 Fuller Brothers Chicago Cubs Postcards and a collection of PSA graded T206 cards including Ty Cobb.
Near sets, partial sets, uncut sheets, hundreds of vintage rookie cards and Hall of Famers and unopened material are also among over 1,500 lots in the auction.
High grade early issues of Sports Illustrated will be up for grabs including the highest graded issue number 1 & 2 (CGC 9.8 & 9.4); the very tough to find October 2, 1961 with Roger Maris cover (CGC 7.5).
The auction has a large number of autographed baseball items including a high-grade single-signed Babe Ruth baseball (PSA/DNA Autograph grade 8); two Ruth signed checks; a boldly signed Christy Mathewson check; a tough to find George Sisler single signed baseball; and a collection of 1949-1969 Topps near and partial signed sets.
Highlights in the basketball category includes: a selection of high-end Michael Jordan short prints, inserts and autographs; a 1961-62 Fleer complete set and a 1977-78 New Orleans Jazz autographed basketball with Pete Maravich.
Football items on the block include vintage programs, tickets and ephemera from the turn of the century through the Super Bowl era. Highlights include a number of complete and near sets from 1955-1979 from high-grade on down including two 1965 Topps football complete sets; a 1966 Topps Joe Namath PSA 10, a selection of Tom Brady graded rookie cards including a 2000 Bowman Chrome PSA 10; a collection of signed Super Bowl programs; 1966 & 1967 Green Bay Packers team signed footballs and programs from the early days of the NFL.
More music autographs and posters from the Larry Magid Electric Factory collection will be offered including 18 signed electric and acoustic guitars from The Who, U2, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Aerosmith; a Bob Dylan signed 2008 concert poster, a Phil Collins & Genesis signed drumhead; a collection of original concert posters including James Taylor and four Platinum Record displays including Dylan.
Other entertainment items include a scarce Marilyn Monroe 1952 signed 20th Century Fox contract; a huge Walt Disney autographed book page as well as a selection of graded coins.
