Huggins and Scott’s fifth Masterpiece Auction of 2014 begins on Monday September 29th with the bidding closing on Thursday night October 9 with the 30-minute rule beginning at 11:00pm eastern time.
Highlights include the highest graded 1908 Rose Company Postcard of Walter Johnson (SGC 55); a pair of rare 1933-36 PCL Zeenut Joe DiMaggio Rookie Cards (each graded by SGC); a seldom-seen 1888 Pugg Cabinet of Thomas McCullum and more.
The post-war collection includes singles, lots, complete and near sets from 1948 to present. Highlights include a completely PSA graded 1956 Topps baseball set (#39 on the PSA Set Registry) and a completely PSA graded 1954 Bowman baseball set (#18 on registry) and numerous lots from sets throughout the 20th century.
This auction has a large number of autographed items with a Lou Gehrig signed newspaper photo; an extremely scarce Grover Cleveland Alexander single-signed baseball; several signed trading cards including Roger Maris, Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle; a neat 1932 Washington Senators team-signed baseball with Babe Ruth added and a 1931 Yankees team-signed baseball with Ruth and Gehrig on the sweet spot.
Also up for bid is a 1875 Peck & Snyder Sterling Silver Presentation Trophy baseball in the original case; a unique 1959 All-Star game cutlery set presented to Mickey Mantle, with an LOA from Mantle’s family; a 1909 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates Type 1 Team Composite photograph; a 1915 World Champion Boston Red Sox team photograph on leather; a late-1920’s Babe Ruth Yankee Stadium locker tag; a 1921 Ty Cobb barnstorming scorecard from San Francisco; and a number of other vintage publications, tickets and press pins from the turn-of-the- century to modern day.
Game-used material includes a pair of 2010 signed Derek Jeter cleats with a Steiner LOA; a 1967 Reggie Jackson Arizona Instructional League game used and signed KC Athletics batting helmet; game used baseball jerseys from Greg Maddux (1993) and Bo Jackson (1991); a Harmon Killebrew 1969-1972 game used bat; a 1933-34 NHL All-Star Ace Bailey Benefit hockey stick; a 2006 Denny Hamlin race-used fire suit and more.
If you don’t collect baseball items, there are high-end pieces from the other sports including a selection of football, basketball and hockey lots and near sets. Highlights include a completely PSA graded 1955 Topps All-American football set (#27 on registry); a collection of 112 different single-signed Football Hall of Famer mini helmets; an autographed Jack Johnson Night Club Ticket (PSA 9); 1927-28 New York Rangers team-signed hockey stick from their championship season and one of the most complete hockey hall of fame autographed pieces ever offered at auction: a HOF jersey with 91 different signatures.
The auction will also include historic material including Free Franks from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, signatures from Ulysses S Grant, John F. Kennedy; FDR; John Wayne and the entire cast of The Sopranos.
