Huggins and Scott opened its final auction of 2014 on Monday, highlighted by the Don Sparks Collection of sports cards, autographs and memorabilia dating back decades.
Over 770 lots are being offered in the catalog.
A Cleveland native, Sparks has been collecting for over 40 years and has decided to sell items including a Cy Young full name signature from an album page and dozens of autographed baseballs including one signed by 15 members of the 1928 Philadelphia A’s and Chicago White Sox including Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker, another signed by the 1939 World Series champion Yankees including Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, single-signed Jimmie Foxx, Dizzy Dean and Satchel Paige balls and many other World Series team balls, milestone theme autographed balls and others. The collection also includes high-end displays featuring autographs of iconic Hall of Famers from various sports, thousands of vintage sports cards and more.
The auction also includes vintage cards of Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig, Mantle and many other stars, a number of graded and ungraded tobacco and candy cards offered as singles and in lots, and more. Highlights include: a pair of the highest graded 1937 Flip Books: Jimmy Foxx (BVG 8) and Joe DiMaggio (BVG 5); a very rare E135 Collins-McCarthy Blank Back Shoeless Joe Jackson (SGC Auth); and an N172 Old Judge John Ward (PSA 3 mk).
The post-war collection encompasses a large number of singles, lots, complete and near sets from 1948 to present. Highlights include a completely PSA graded 1956 Topps baseball set (#46 on registry) and a completely PSA graded 1959 Topps baseball set (#35 on registry). The #2 rated Cal Ripken Jr. graded card collection on the PSA registry with (1450+ cards including (74) Pop 1 PSA 10s.
The 126-page color catalog also includes vintage publications, tickets and press pins from the turn-of-the-century to modern day. Bob Turley’s 1954 All-Star Game bat signed by 20 AL All-Stars is among the items. Turley injured himself pre-game and wasn’t able to play in the contest 60 years ago. There is also a pair of 1996 Michael Jordan game used shoes; a Mark Messier game used Rangers jersey and LeBron James’ game uniform from the Shooting Stars tournament.
Football, basketball and hockey lots and near sets include a completely PSA graded 1960 Fleer Football set (#9 on the PSA Set Registry); a rare 1926 Red Grange Shotwell Candy wrapper; a high-grade 1962 Cleveland Browns team signed football with Ernie Davis and many others.
There are also non-sports sets along with historic and entertainment memorabilia.
