There aren’t many players left in the NBA who were born in the 1970s and began their career in the 1990s. Two of them are now among the NBA’s top six scorers.
You can find Dirk Nowitzki’s hottest cards as early as 1998 and as recent as right now. The 37-year-old native of Germany has moved into sixth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Nowitzki, a 13-time all-star, passed Shaquille O’Neal (28,596) in a 119-118 overtime win over the Brooklyn Nets on December 23.
The NBA’s top six leading scorer list now looks like this:
- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
- Karl Malone
- Kobe Bryant
- Michael Jordan
- Wilt Chamberlain
- Dirk Nowitzki
“It’s surreal passing Shaq. He’s an all-time great and a legend,” Nowitzki said. “I was able to compete against him for a long, long time. I was a fan of his in the ’90s. He’s arguably the most dominant big man ever seen in this game, so it’s sort of weird that I’m up there now with all these legends. But like I always say, I’m really going to enjoy this when my career is over.”
Nowitzki debuted before autographed rookie cards became the standard and he has fewer than 20 total rookie cards but his 1998-99 issues do include a couple of serial numbered cards in SP Authentic and SPx Finite. Topps Chrome, EX-Century, Topps Finest and Upper Deck Black Diamond are among the other popular Nowitzki rookie cards but after 17 seasons, he’s got plenty of others that are more valuable thanks to low print runs and autographs.
With 30,000 points on the horizon, it’s not surprising high grade Nowitzki rookies of all kinds are starting to gain new respect.
