It’s the set that gave us David Robinson’s rookie cards (both of them); draft pick redemption cards and borderless photos that will take today’s 30-somethings back to their childhood. Hoops brand cards are coming back, ready to launch in March as part of the Panini America NBA license.
After more than a year of buildup that included special preview cards at last year’s NBA All-Star Game, Panini has finally unveiled more details about Hoops’ return to the trading card market.
Panini describes the 2012 version as a “throwback to the landmark 1989-90 release”. That’s the one that featured what was at the time a highly sought after Robinson rookie card and a second, featuring the Navy center in his San Antonio Spurs uniform.
There were no autographed insert cards back then, but this year’s version will deliver two autographs per box and a 279-card base set that digs deep into each team roster, including a special Champions chase card that will round out the set.
Highlighting the release is a 179-card Hoops Autographs set featuring the likes of Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul and Dirk Nowitzki.
Also featured is the special “A Night to Remember” insert set that was selected completely by collectors through an online vote.
Players of yesteryear are feted with a “Heroes” insert set.
The 2012 Hoops set’s photography is bolstered by the inclusion of original 1989-90 Hoops BuyBacks featuring on-card autographs.
