A 1910 Tip Top Honus Wagner, a near complete run of cards from Mickey Mantle’s career, a Michael Jordan debut ticket stub and hundreds of other items are now up for grabs in Hindman’s new sports collectibles auction.
The sale is the largest sports sale in the Chicago-based company’s history.
Debut of the GOAT
The full impact was a few years away, but basketball changed for good on the night of Oct. 26, 1984. The Chicago Bulls met the Washington Bullets in a game the Bulls’ marketing team touted as the coming out party for its new top draft pick.
Michael Jordan would live up to it and then some.
Hindman is offering one of only ten PSA authenticated ticket stubs from Jordan’s NBA debut game. It’s expected to sell for $8,000-$12,000.
A BGS 8.5 Jordan rookie card is also in the sale.
Wagner Rarity
The auction’s biggest item is a rare copy of the 1910 Tip Top Bread Honus Wagner graded SGC 3. Released in honor of the Pirates 1909 World Series title, the card was a part of a mail-in sweepstakes where consumers would mail-in 50 Tip Top Bread labels to receive all 25 cards in the series. It was, not surprisingly, too much of a challenge for most.
The card carries an estimate of $80,000-$120,000.
Mantle Chronicle
The auction features a near complete run of all Mantle trading cards created during his 17-year playing career. The highlights of the run are lower grade examples of his 1952 Topps and 1951 Bowman rookie cards.
Monsters of the Midway
The auction features a diverse array of memorabilia related to the Chicago Bears from the early days of the franchise, through the dominant 1985 Super Bowl run.
Hindman has been offering items from the personal collection of Mike Ditka and the current sale includes his 1961 rookie contract. The contract is signed by Ditka and Bears founder George Halas along with Ditka’s mother and NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle.
Ditka’s TAG Heuer watch worn during the 1985 season and Super Bowl XX is also among the listings.
Chicago area fans will remember a 1980s advertising campaign featuring quarterback Jim McMahon in which he sits atop a motor scooter as jump-cuts show the “punky QB” in a rapid succession of garish outfits and exclaims, “Outrageousness is nothing more than a way to wake people up, especially yourself.” Long displayed in McMahon’s restaurante, the 1986 Honda Elite motor scooter is on the block in this auction and is expected to bring $4,000-$6,000.
Additional Highlights
Other notable lots from the auction include a signed game-used 1982 Mike Schmidt bat, a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente rookie, a group of over 100 1914 B18 Baseball Blankets including multiple Hall of Famers, a Magic Johnson/Lakers display piece and multiple Jordan autographed items.
The full auction can be viewed online here. Bidding runs through June 26.
