Heritage Auctions has launched the second offering of The David Hall T206 Collection, featuring a set of the hobby’s most celebrated tobacco issue, including a low-grade example of the famed T206 Honus Wagner, a Ty Cobb with Cobb back and an example of the rare Eddie Plank card. Only the ultra-scarce Joe Doyle “NY Nat’l” error is missing from the collection.
Bidding on the Wagner, which has had its borders trimmed and is graded ‘Altered’ by PSA, stood at $160,000 as of Monday afternoon. It’s expected to top $300,000 by the close of the auction next month.
The Cobb back is graded PSA 2 and carries a pre-sale estimate of $200,000 and up.
Overall, the set is renowned for its quality. The aggregate GPA of 6.89 puts it as the second highest rated T206 set on the PSA Set Registry.
“Only the most knowledgeable and resourceful of collectors could piece together a T206 set of this condition and comprehensiveness,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions for Heritage. “David is a true hobby legend.”
In addition to the more than 520 lots of cards, the auction also includes the best known example of the Cobb Tobacco tin, theorized to be related to the production and distribution T206 Cobb back cards.
Other auction highlights include:
