REA’s June Encore Auction closed Sunday night, and set building was once again an overarching theme of the event, with six complete graded sets finishing among the top ten items. The top three sellers were Topps Baseball complete sets from 1963 ($75,000), 1960 ($66,000), and 1961 ($54,000), all of which rank among the top entries on the PSA Set Registry, with the ’63 set ranking 18th.
Complete sets from 1950 Bowman, 1964 Topps, and 1965 Topps Baseball each sold for $37,200. The ’50 Bowman set is rated 10th on the registry.
Comprising 3,278 lots, the auction generated just over $1.7 million in sales across more than 67,300 bids.
One of the event’s top sellers was a 1970-1971 Topps Basketball #160 Jerry West PSA GEM MINT 10 – one of only two examples graded this high – that sold for $54,000, a new record for the card in any grade.
The Basketball Hall of Famer, and inspiration for the league’s logo, passed away last week at the age of 86.

“This auction reinforced the strong results for top-quality graded sets lately as well as the consistent appetite for vintage staples and hard-to-find rarities,” said REA President Brian Dwyer. “Our Summer Catalog Auction kicks off next month loaded with items that we expect will excite collectors and continue these trends.”
REA’s Summer Catalog Auction will kick off on July 23 with catalogs available upon request. The company will have many of the top auction items on display at booth #6032 during The National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland.
