The St. Louis Cardinals commissioned statues to honor their all-time greats outside the new Busch Stadium. But a funny thing happened to Mark McGwire on the way to Cooperstown…..
Missouri sculptor and baseball fan Harry Weber created the ten bronze statues of Cardinal greats and Negro Leagues star Cool Papa Bell that sit outside the team’s memorabilia shop.
Owner Bill DeWitt commissioned a McGwire statue in 2002 when it appeared Big Mac was–like the others– a cinch for the Hall of Fame. Since then, the steroid scandal has McGwire a long way from the Hall and the statue sitting undercover in a downtown office. Collectors have tried to buy it but it’s still Cardinal property.
