You think the T206 Honus Wagner card is rare? It’s not even the most rare card of Honus Wagner.
The known population of a graded advertising card from Louisville cigar maker Henry Reccius that features the Flying Dutchman on the front can be counted on one hand, even after making room for another amazing find of this 19th century treasure.
A family in the state of Washington stands to make out like a bandit after finding out how rare the heirloom from a family relative actually was. The Reccius Wagner they own wasn’t exactly treated like a fine piece of history, though. No one really knew what it was until they dug around and did some research.
Only two known graded examples of the card exist. One sold in 2006, also through Lelands, for $52,059. The one that will be up for bid later this month is graded ‘Authentic’ with a center crease. That won’t likely matter to bidders of extremely scarce vintage cards.
The latest discovery of the Reccius Wagner comes with some anxious moments. The Colvins misplaced it as they were doing their research according to this story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
