The 1979 Heisman Trophy is about to get a good table at Mickey Mantle’s restaurant.
You may never win a Heisman Trophy, but you’ll soon be able to see one up close.
The 1979 Heisman award is about to join an already stellar lineup of sports memorabilia inside Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant in New York City.
GOTTA HAVE IT Collectibles, Inc. has purchased the award won by USC tailback Charles White and plans to display the trophy inside the restaurant.
“We’re happy to bring the trophy to the public since many have never seen a Heisman Trophy in person before, and may not have another opportunity in the near future due to the closing of the New York Sports Museum,” said GOTTA HAVE IT CEO Pete Siegel.
The trophy has been sold on a few occasions since White originally placed it into the marketplace. It changed hands last year at auction for $216,000. GOTTA HAVE IT purchased it from the winner of the auction.
Since White’s sale of the award, the Downtown Athletic Club has forced all recipients to sign a waiver promising never to sell their trophies.
Mickey Mantle’s is located at 42 Central Park South, between 5th and 6th Avenues.
