New York’s autograph collectors are always on the search for famous baseball names–wherever they may be.
Card shows and exclusive autograph deals make some lucky athletes a small fortune in extra cash. They also make some players more reluctant to sign free for the public.
But enough of them do to keep adult collectors–and no doubt some dealers–busy keeping track of where they’re going to appear beyond the ballpark.
Special events and even nights on the town can turn into impromptu autograph signings for the players.
“Personally, it’s very flattering to see these people waiting for me wherever I go,” said David Wright.
A column in the New York Times reports that for the guys with the markers and backpacks full of stuff to get signed, patience is not only a virtue, it’s a requirement.
