While hard copy tickets to the 2020 World Series were not an option for most fans and it first appeared as if 2020 would be the first year that collectors wouldn’t have access to them, that’s not entirely true.
It appears a small number do exist, and they appear to be destined to become some of the rarest World Series tickets of all time. Collectors who happened to have been in attendance– and were in the right place at the right time– walked away with a souvenir way more valuable than any price they might have paid to get in.
2020 World Series tickets will be some of the most scarce and desirable pieces of Dodgers championship merchandise you can buy.
While some fans were allowed into Globe Life Field, ticketing to each game was handled through the MLB Ballpark app with “ticket takers”at the gate scanning bar codes on mobile devices. However, Major League Baseball appears to have produced a very small number of physical tickets for each game–likely prepared for VIPs and others who may have needed them. The unclaimed tickets where then handed out to those who were savvy enough to simply ask.
A few of those tickets have made their way online. As of Monday night, there were two available on eBay, one from the opening game and another from the Game 6 clincher, both at four-figure prices.
One of those sellers explained how they were distributed at the ballpark and it’s like something out of the distant past.
The ducats aren’t fancy but for avid collectors, that’s secondary to the knowledge that it’s still possible to continue a run of printed tickets in an era that’s become decidedly digital.
