The period leading up to Thanksgiving and early December can be summed up in two words: auction season.
The major players in the game usually hold their final sales of the year as America gets set to reach for the turkey and trimmings. Grey Flannel Auctions will open its annual Holiday Auction on Monday, Nov. 20 with over 1,000 lots up for bids.
The catalog will include game model gear, cards, autographs and other memorabilia across several decades.
Two gloves tied to a pair of baseball icons are among the featured items, according to the company: a 1950s Sandy Koufax model and a 1962 Roberto Clemente Rawlings mitt. According to the auction house, the glove “was (sourced) from the manager of the Pittsburgh YMCA where Clemente and several of the Pirates players worked out. (The) Clemente glove is among the number of items he received from the players.”
Both gloves have been examined by PSA/DNA.
There’s a 1971 Pete Rose Cincinnati Reds home jersey that’s been signed baseball’s all-time hit king with a full SGC/Dave Grob authentication booklet.
A signed game bat from Rose’s Big Red Machine teammate, Johnny Bench, is also offered.
There are numerous NBA items in the auction, including a 1971-72 Jerry West Lakers jersey, sourced from the Logo himself at some point and a warmup jacket from Julius Erving’s first year in the NBA. Accompanied by two in-game photo matches, the jacket has been tied to use in the 1976-77 season and the 1977 NBA All-Star Game. It’s been signed by Erving in black marker along the base of the right front tail.
NFL items include a game-worn, photomatched Dan Marino Miami Dolphins jersey from 1997 and one worn and signed by New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees with NFL Auctions paperwork.
The auction is set to run through Dec. 10 on the Grey Flannel Auctions website.
