Bear Bryant walked on it. You’d think that alone would have made the old Poly Turf at Legion Field into some kind of sacred ground. But it almost wound up on the scrap heap.
Michael Musgrove isn’t really a collector. He is a big Alabama football fan though. And he’s now the proud owner of about 2,400 square feet of artificial turf that for 25 years was the playing surface for most of the big Crimson Tide games.
He wonders aloud whether plunking down cash for a piece of Legion Field’s field certifies him as a fanatic.
"Everybody I’ve talked to thinks I’m crazy, but then they ask me how much it is," the Northport attorney said. The huge rolls of turf were almost discarded but some like-minded individuals convinced those in charge that an auction might work.
