Expansion had yet to arrive and players on the “Original Six” NHL teams were familiar to fans but none were more famous than Mr. Hockey in the early 1960s.
Gordie Howe’s career began just after World War II and lasted until he was in his 50s, playing in the World Hockey Association. His 32-year-career included 25 with the Detroit Red Wings where he played on 23 All-Star teams. He still holds NHL records for most games and seasons played.
The RMY Auctions Photo of the Day should look familiar to collectors of hockey cards. It’s the same image you’ll find on Howe’s 1961 and ’62 Parkhurst cards. The 8×10 image shows Howe in his Red Wings uniform, crouched over the puck. Despite being more than five decades old, it remains in high grade with some typical, light wear at the corners.
The photo is part of an auction of over 1,200 images underway through July 22 at RMYAuctions.com.
