Michael Jordan, Mickey Mantle and Mike Trout were the athletic stars during the Goldin Auctions 2018 Summer Live and Premium Auction that ended Saturday night, but American politicians also shared center stage.
The 900 lots of sports, historical and entertainment memorabilia combined to net $4 million in sales.
A 1997-98 game-used and signed home jersey worn by Chicago Bulls icon Michael Jordan sold for $122,750. The jersey was photo-matched to the game on April 11, 1998, against the Orlando Magic, when Jordan collected his 5,000th career assist.
Jordan also figured big in a complete 1986-87 Fleer Basketball set graded PSA 9 and PSA 10. The set sold for $47,872.
A pair of Mantle cards took top dollar at the auction. A 1951 Bowman rookie card graded SGC 84, fetched a winning bid of $19,640. The 1952 Topps card of Mantle wasn’t far behind, with a PSA 2 specimen selling for $17,185.
A KSA 10 1966-67 Topps rookie card of hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Orr was purchased for $14,370. Meanwhile, a photo-matched red alternate jersey worn in 2016 by Trout on Aug. 11 and Aug. 15 (he in each game) sold for $12,275.
Four presidents commanded five-figure auction prices. The presidential oath of office, handwritten and signed by Ronald Reagan, sold for $18,412. A handwritten letter signed by Abraham Lincoln pulled in $17,185, while the rocking chair used by John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House sold for $12,275.
Big ticket items from the live portion of the auction held a week earlier during the National Sports Collectors Convention featured the final game-used bat belonging to Cap Anson. The 1897 J.F. Hillerich & Son model commanded $349,837. A 1933 Goudey card of Babe Ruth, graded PSA 9, sold for a record $319,150.
Another game-used bat, a Hillerich & Bradsby 40k model belonging to Nap Lajoie circa 1914-15, sold for $136,252.
And the two quarterback rivals from Super Bowl XLII, Eli Manning and Tom Brady, had items that sold for the exact price ($81,015): Manning’s helmet from the Super Bowl, where he led the New York Giants to an upset win against undefeated New England and a game-used road uniform belonging to Brady from the Patriots’ Super Bowl season.
