Hockey card manufacturer In the Game’s upcoming Between the Pipes issue will include a card of Tom Fenton, an amateur goalie whose story made national news when he was signed to a one-day emergency contract by the Phoenix Coyotes last month.
On December 16, the 26-year-old raced to the rink after the Coyotes’ Ilya Bryzgalov fell ill and was unable to play in a game against the New York Rangers. There was no time to call up a prospect from their farm team, so Fenton got the unexpected call.
By the next night, he was no longer an NHL player but in just a few hours, Fenton became a bit of a folk hero and agreed to a deal with In The Game. The 2010-11 Between The Pipes base set will include the first card of Fenton.
A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Fenton previously played for American International College Yellow Jackets from 2005-06 to 2008-09 and presently serves as the Head of Game Operations and Community Relations at Manhattanville College.
He’ll even have some autographed cards tucked inside random packs of 2011 Between The Pipes.
“As soon as Fenton sat on the bench for Phoenix, collectors were asking us if we were going include him in Between The Pipes,” said Dr. Brian Price of In The Game. “Naturally, we set out to do everything we could to get him to sign a deal with us and we are pleased to have him be a part of this set. You’re not going to see him in any other products this season, so it was important that we do our best to bring his cards to collectors.”
In The Game has also signed agreements with several females who’ve donned the hockey goalie masks and have represented Team Canada. Manon Rheaume, Charline Labonte, Kim St-Pierre and Sami-Jo Small will all have base, autograph and game-used memorabilia cards in Between The Pipes this season.
“We have worked with all four of these women in previous releases and collectors still can’t get enough of their cards,” said Price. “All of them have been champions and have represented Canada with pride at numerous tournaments and we are proud to provide collectors with an opportunity to obtain new cards of them.”
The 200-card Between The Pipes base set will once again include some of the biggest young stars from the Canadian Hockey League and American Hockey League along with many current and retired goaltenders – many of which are fan or cult favorites.
“Our mission with many of our products this season has been to include players that rarely appear on cards these days,” said Price. “I think that fans of the game’s grand history will enjoy what they see in Between The Pipes.”
