Two PSA 9-rated cards of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth combined to sell for over $1.1 million as Heritage Auctions completed the sale of what had been the finest 1933 Goudey set on PSA’s Set Registry late Thursday night.
The #160 Gehrig card was the highest selling of the 240 cards in the set, bringing $576,000 with the 20% buyer’s premium. One of the four Ruth cards in the set, the #144 netted $528,000. Only four PSA 9 Ruth #144 cards exist with no 10s, despite its status as a double print.
Many of the cards in the set represented the highest graded examples and every card graded 8 or 9.
The top ten prices totaled over $2.3 million alone.
Not all of the cards that sold for $50,000 or more each were Hall of Famers. Card #79, a PSA 9-rated Red Faber sold for $50,400. It’s the only 9 ever graded by PSA.
