A mix of vintage and modern game jerseys were driving the traffic in the third auction from Game Used Universe.
A jersey worn by Peyton Manning during the Indianapolis Colts’ run to Super Bowl XLI in 2006 brought a winning bid of $6278 in a sports memorabilia auction conducted by Game Used Universe. The company’s 15% buyer’s premium pushed the actual realized price to $7220.
The jersey was autographed by Manning on the back and the quarterback also noted the shirt as "game used" and "SB XLI MVP" in silver sharpie.
Game Used Universe conducted its third auction with the usual focus on game-worn and game-used baseball, football and basketball items.
A Roberto Clemente game bat, signed by the late Hall of Famer, also drew attention in the sale which closed just before 3 AM Eastern time Friday morning. The bat sold for $5966 including the buyer’s premium.
A Cal Ripken 1988 game-worn Orioles road jersey sold for $5894 while another vintage double knit–this one donned by Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers during the Milwaukee Brewers’ pennant-winning season of 1982, sold for $4926.
Game Used Universe also offered the first jersey from Super Bowl II to be sold at auction. Dave Kocourek, a tight end and special teams player for the Oakland Raiders, consigned his autographed black jersey and it sold for $3701. John Taylor’s 49ers jersey from Super Bowl XXIX sold for $3061 while a Taylor helmet from the first part of his career–the one he says he was wearing when he caught Joe Montana’s game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl XXIII–sold for $2297.
Another vintage NFL jersey sold by GUU was a 1960 inaugural year Dallas Cowboys Don Bishop gamer which found a new home at a price of $3969.
Among modern era baseball shirts sold, a 2007 Joba Chamberlain game-worn Yankees road jersey drew 17 bids and sold for $4735 while a 2008 Daisuke Matsuzaka Red Sox alternate button-down which sold for $4035.
