Jerseys from the John Kindler Collection, a game-worn Miracle On Ice jersey and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle from a famous find of the 1980s were the among the hot sellers in Heritage Auctions’ recent Platinum Sports Auction, which realized more than $7.15 million.
“The John Kindler Collection of game worn football jerseys proved what we have long suspected,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “Football memorabilia is a collecting genre with tremendous growth potential. We saw prices exceeding even our optimistic projections and we expect that trend to continue.”
The first installment of Kindler’s collection garnered nearly $450,000 in sales, with more offerings to come in future Heritage events.
The Mantle card, graded SGC 86 (NM+), sold for $65,725. It originated in a find of uncirculated 1952 Topps high numbers purchased by Alan “Mr. Mint” Rosen in 1986. Most of the highest graded Mantles in the hobby originated with that find.
Baseball memorabilia and cards in the auction included Ken Griffey Jr.’s 600th home run ball, which sold for $59,750. The ring issued to St. Louis Cardinals pitcher George Munger for his part in capturing the 1946 World Series Championship went for for $35,850 and a rare single signed baseball from early Hall of Famer Napoleon Lajoie commanded $41,825.
Heritage says it offered more vintage cards in the Fall Platinum Auction than in any previous auction. In addition to the Mantle, a 1952 Bowman Willie Mays, one of five rating PSA Mint 9, eclipsed the previous high with a $31,070 final price. Fellow Hall of Fame center fielder Mickey Mantle likewise set a new mark with $21,510 for a PSA Mint 9 example of his 1958 Topps card as did hockey legend Jean Beliveau with $16,730 for the finest example known of his 1953 Parkhurst. A 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson graded SGC 55 (VG-EX+), sold for $44,813.
A rare unopened 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey unopened wax box of 48 sold for $40,033.
