Pro Football Hall of Famer Gale Sayers has chosen to sell his personal collection and came to the National Sports Collectors Convention Wednesday to unveil some of his items that will be up for bid at the Super Bowl 50 Live Auction in San Francisco early next year.
After a brilliant college career, Sayers spent seven seasons in the NFL during the 1960s and early 1970s.
Items on display at the National include what’s listed below but it’s just a small sampling of what will be up for bid in early February, the day before Super Bowl 50:
- 1970 Byron ‘Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year Award
- 1965 Gale Sayers College All-Stars sweater
1966 Gale Sayers Chicago Bears single game rushing record game ball
- NFL 75th Anniversary Trophy: Running Back
- 1977 National Football Hall of Fame presentational Certificate
- Gale Sayers original painting by William Barringer
A portion of all proceeds from the Sayers Collection items will benefit the Gale Sayers Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is dedicated to supporting deserved schools in Chicago who are utilizing innovative and technology-based learning methods to better prepare students for college and/or careers.

“I could not envision a more appropriate way to share some of my cherished memorabilia then to announce the event in Chicago where I played and to be included within an auction at Super Bowl 50,” remarked Sayers. “It is my sincere hope that Bears fans and football fans across the country enjoy these items as much as I did. I am happy that their sale will support the Gale Sayers Foundation in its goals.”
Hunt Auctions is teaming with NFL Auction for the eighth consecutive year, offering hundreds of items including game-used jerseys, cleats, footballs, and Super Bowl memorabilia. Proceeds benefit NFL PLAY 60, the movement towards a more active youth community, and the American Cancer Society.
“In anticipation of the most significant football dedicated auction in history, we are elated to kick off the event with the announcement of the Gale Sayers collection,” said David Hunt, President of Hunt Auctions. “Gale Sayers serves as model of excellence for both the way he played the game and for the exemplary integrity with which he lived his life. We are honored to be involved with this historic offering.”
