Despite news stories to the contrary, the sports card business is not on life support.
New cards are being cranked out on a regular basis and even if you think the shark was jumped a long time ago in the proliferation department, people are buying. We hope a lot of them are young. And we also hope a lot of them are going to the National. The card companies are certainly doing their part to create some life-long collectors at the show.
Upper Deck is releasing a star-studded set for its wrapper redemption program that not only encourages collecting sets, it’s meant to keep folks coming back each day of the show scheduled for July 30-August 3 at the Stephens Convention Center in Chicago.
On Thursday and Friday, children age 15 or younger can come by the company’s booth to receive a free pack of cards (while supplies last).
The wrapper redempton program returns with attendees turning in wrappers from virtually any 2008 Upper Deck branded products in exchange for a 6-card set of exclusive National redemption cards (while supplies last). Randomly inserted into the redemption packs are autograph variations and combo signature cards of superstars like Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Ken Griffey Jr. and LeBron James. The redemption program begins every Thursday with distribution beginning at noon.
