The 2023 National is loaded with former Chicago sports icons that are making appearances and signing autographs for Windy City sports fans.
But not many still are working for their former team and still living in the city. Bill Wennington is the color commentator for the Bulls Radio Network and being seven-feet tall is instantly recognizable wherever he goes.
“I like it,” explained the native of Montreal, who played his college basketball at St. Johns. “It was an amazing time playing in Chicago and I’m always greeted with a smile. How many people can say that?”

He was drafted 16th in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks where he played his first several seasons. Wennington made his NBA debut on October 29, 1985. On June 26, 1990, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings along with two 1990 first-round draft picks in exchange for a player and two future second-round draft picks.
Before signing as a free agent with the Chicago Bulls in 1993 where he earned three NBA championship rings, he spent a few years in Italy playing for Bologna in Italy. He also was a longtime member of the Canadian National Team.

As he signed for collectors at the show, I asked him if he collected anything from his time with the Bulls.
“I have some jerseys,” said Wennington, whipping off autographs with a Sharpie in hand. “I never was one to keep little trinkets, but I made sure to keep some of my game jerseys and practice jerseys from the Bulls. Maybe I should’ve kept more!”
Wennington is regarded as one of the best NBA color analysts on radio. He received numerous compliments from fans for his radio work with play-by-play partner, Chuck Swirsky.
