Part of the fun that comes with being a dealer of vintage sports cards and memorabilia is that you never know who is going to come through the door, stop at your booth during a convention or send you an email. Some are ready to sell or consign something good.
Yet long-time sellers know it’s the repeat customers who make it possible to count on a steady source of inventory–and income.
To maintain its status as eBay’s largest seller of this type of material, one dealer relies on its regulars.
“When I open a box from him, it is almost like receiving a birthday present each month. You’re excited, you can’t wait to find out what is in it, and you know you are going to like it.”
While some of the company’s clients are advanced collectors, others consign only when they need to liquidate in a hurry. Just Collect can turn its inventory quickly by using eBay.
“We have many consignors that have been working with us for many years and several that send boxes in every month,” Greenwald said. “We have several dealer consignors who send us in boxes regularly.”
It ensures fresh inventory to feed the ravenous “other side” of Just Collect’s business: it’s list of some 30,000 collectors looking to add to their stash of vintage cards, not to mention the thousands of potential eBay buyers who may stumble across the company’s listings. It’s a lot of work, but a lot more fun than selling watches or clothes.
“When people ask how it feels to own and run Just Collect, I tell them that while there is work involved like any business, there is still a ‘kid in the candy store’ feeling,” Greenwald said.
