The strange and sad tale of NHL star Darren McCarty’s debt has added another chapter.
There were no Stanley Cup rings. No trophies. No game-worn rookie jerseys. Just stuff the average 30-something single guy might have in his house. Only this time it was for sale…and not by choice.
A public auction was held in Michigan to help cover McCarty’s mounting debt. Fans came hoping, maybe, for something hockey-related. Amazingly, they were quite happy to overpay for just about anything the former Detroit Red Wings player owned.
McCarty is embarrassed and vows to fight any attempt by the system to snare his most prized possessions.
For some of his former teammates, the situation was a wake-up call to manage their own finances as carefully as possible.
