Spring training is generally a pretty nice place to be if you’re an autograph collector. But the quest for big names sometimes squeezes out the little guys…and girls.
There was a great picture in a recent Sports Illustrated magazine showing a smiling Sandy Koufax granting an autograph at Dodgertown in 1981. A simple knee-high rope separated the Hall of Famer from the fan for whom he was signing.
That laid-back scene is pretty rare these days. The value of a signature can make it a tough place to be for kids.
Some use the month of March to build their autograph collections, staking out parking lots before and after games and workouts.
