On the heels of its splashy sports carnival in New York, Fanatics is turning up the hype meter once again with its plans for a splashy live auction of high-end sports cards in the city next month.
As we reported in June, the company has partnered with Sotheby’s for an ongoing series of such events to complement its Fanatics Collect marketplace.
The inaugural event will be held at Harlem Parish on Sept. 24, a deconsecrated church on West 118th Street in New York, with “an energized atmosphere evocative of stadium entertainment at the height of refinement and luxury,” according to Fanatics.
The ‘Holy Grail’ auction will have more than 40 mostly modern era cards with the cards on display on Sept. 23 and 24. Well known celebrities and athletes—some of whom appear on the cards in the auction—will attend.
The first group of cards announced Wednesday aren’t really that different from what you might see in any other high-end auction at various times of the year, but there is one card that could net a seven-figure price: a 2005-06 Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Logoman Autographs #DLA-JE Michael Jordan and Julius Erving – BGS 8.5/Autograph 10 | 1 of 1.
It’s one of only two such cards with Jordan and Erving from the landmark Exquisite brand and one of just eight dual Logoman autographs in existence from Exquisite Collection to feature Jordan.
From the same set, a 1/1 LeBron James autographed two-color patch autograph graded BGS 8.5/10 carries a $350,000+ estimate.
One of the ten 1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Emerald Tim Duncan rookie cards, this one graded BGS 8, is also part of the auction lineup as well as a 2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady autograph card with a 9.5/10 rating from Beckett.
Among the vintage cards that will be up for grabs is a 1955 Topps #164 Roberto Clemente PSA 9 rookie card estimated to fetch $800,000-$1 million by Sotheby’s. It’s one of only a small number of Clemente rookies to grade that highly at any of the major grading services.
A 1948-49 Leaf Jackie Robinson rookie card graded PSA 8 is also part of the auction.
More cards that will be part of the auction will be announced at a later date.
The monthly Premier Auction from Fanatics Collect was set to close Thursday night with one of Tom Brady’s last jerseys, a key Steph Curry rookie card and 1984-85 Star Michael Jordan among the headliners.
