Single cards from one of the most rare regional card sets of all-time were again among the big sellers in Huggins and Scott’s May auction.
Each of the company’s recent auctions have included cards from the 1950s Esskay Meats Orioles sets.
Last year, sixteen individual lots of Esskay cards sold for a combined $78,607. This time, a 1955 Esskay Bob Kuzava paced the bidding. The card drew a small group of aggressive bidders before closing at $28,200 including the buyer’s premium.
A unique 1954 Esskay Dick Kokos card–with a back that featured a Briggs Mickey Mantle image–brought $23,500. The Esskay and Briggs meat boxes were apparently printed by the same company, leading to the rare “variation” back.
H&S also offered a game-worn Hank Aaron road jersey dating from the late 1960s. The signed jersey drew 14 bids and sold for $25,850.
Among the higher grade single signed baseballs in the auction weer a pair signed by Babe Ruth. One brought $11,162 while the second ball sold for $9987.
A pristine Roger Maris autographed ball went for $4406. Several high-grade baseball card sets were offered including a 1968 Topps set with 141 graded cards, most in the 7-9 range. It brought $7050.
