The 2016 National Sports Collectors Convention is set for August 3-8 at the Atlantic City Convention Center. It’ll be the first time there since 2003 and the third overall.
National organizers typically don’t release attendance numbers but indicated to us Monday they were “ecstatic” about the number of collectors who made their way to the Stephens Convention Center last week for the 36th NSCC. Especially encouraging might be the number of youngsters who were there–and looked excited.
CSN (Comcast Sports Net) Chicago was a media partner and gave away some meet and greet opportunities; one with the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team and another with Frank Thomas, who is pictured at right with winners Tim Petch and David Rodriguez. Each got the opportunity to get a full-size helmet signed by the Hall of Famer on the main stage.

Speaking of Big Frank, we selected a jersey signed by the former Sox slugger during the Media Challenge Box Break/Autographed Jersey Draft on Wednesday night, a fun event that included former Bears’ QB Bobby Douglass, Beckett Media’s Chris Olds and some local sports broadcasting folks from Chicago.
We’re closing in on 70,000 Facebook fans and we’ll give it away there soon so be sure to like the page if you haven’t done so yet.
There were also signed jerseys from Ernie Banks, Bobby Hull, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Scottie Pippen, Derek Rose, Brian Urlacher and others on the draft board.

A 1986-87 Fleer basketball pack with a Michael Jordan rookie card on top and a Jordan sticker on the bottom of was sold in Chicago. The excited buyer was Thomas Fish, owner of Blowout Cards, but he told us it might not stay in his collection.
We’re wondering if it might wind up as the featured attraction in one of the soon-to-be-released re-pack products.
That 1997-98 Fleer Precious Metal Gems Emerald Jordan card offered by Baseball Card Exchange closed at auction over the weekend.
One of just ten in existence, the card is a holy grail item for MJ collectors.
There were some issues with bidding on the last day and BBCE was working to resolve those so we’re not sure at this point what will happen. For now, you can see what the final tally was here.
