The trade that sent Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland apparently has collectors believing big things are ahead for the Cavs and their new 26-year-old star.
The September 1 deal sent Mitchell from the rebuilding Utah Jazz to a budding Eastern Conference power in exchange for three players and three first round picks. In his first five NBA seasons with Utah, Mitchell has averaged nearly 24 points along with 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He’s been an All-Star in each of the past three seasons.
Between August 31 and the end of the day on September 1, searches for “Donovan Mitchell rookie card” increased a whopping 845% on eBay. Searches for “Donovan Mitchell trading card” jumped 715% and searches for his name alone were up 545%.
Collectors and investors were putting their money where their searches were, too. eBay tells us sales of Mitchell cards increased 400% after the trade was announced while sales of all Mitchell items grew 458%.
Between September 1 and 2, nearly $24,000 worth of individual Mitchell cards sold on eBay, topped by a 2018 Panini Kaboom card.
There have been more than a dozen Mitchell cards that have sold for over $10,000 on eBay in 2022. A 2017-18 Panini National Treasures Gold Rookie Patch Autograph numbered to 10 and graded 10 by PSA has been the biggest seller at nearly $36,000.
In all, eBay has seen more than 37,000 Mitchell items sold for over $2 million this year. You can see current listings for his rookie cards here.
